About Us

Newcastle Builders,
Family Built.

JALBAR Constructions is a family-owned building company with over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Founded on the belief that quality craftsmanship and honest communication should never be compromised, we've grown from a small carpentry operation into a full-service construction and renovation business — without ever losing the personal touch that defines who we are.

As a family business, our reputation is everything. Every project we take on carries our name, and we treat each home as if it were our own. From knockdown rebuilds and large-scale renovations through to bespoke joinery and insurance repairs, our team brings the same dedication and care to every job — no matter the size.

With generations of combined experience across construction, carpentry, project management, and site supervision, JALBAR has the depth of knowledge and the hands-on expertise to deliver results that stand the test of time. We're proud to be a local, family company — and proud of the homes we've helped build across the region.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions About Building in Newcastle

Answers to the questions we hear most often from Newcastle & Lake Macquarie homeowners.

What areas do you service?
JALBAR Constructions is based in Newcastle and services the greater Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region, including Merewether, Charlestown, Warners Bay, Belmont, Cardiff, Adamstown, New Lambton and the surrounding Hunter area.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. JALBAR Constructions holds NSW Fair Trading builder licence number 390144C (ACN 653 126 071) and carries full public liability and home warranty insurance on every project.
How much does a knock down rebuild cost in Newcastle?
Knock down rebuild cost in Newcastle depends on the size of the home, inclusions, site conditions and demolition requirements. A typical custom rebuild starts from around $3,500 per square metre and can run higher for premium finishes or difficult sites. We provide a detailed, itemised quote after a site visit so you know exactly what's included.
How long does a kitchen or bathroom renovation take?
A typical bathroom renovation takes three to five weeks on-site once trades mobilise, and a full kitchen renovation with custom joinery takes four to eight weeks. Lead times for cabinetry and stone can extend this, so we plan the schedule around material availability before we start.
Do you handle insurance repair work?
Yes. We work directly with loss adjusters and insurance assessors on storm damage, water damage, fire damage and structural repair claims across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie — from scope-of-works through to handover.
Do you take care of council approvals and permits?
Yes. We manage DA and CDC approvals, BASIX, private certifier coordination, Section 68 permits, waste management plans and any engineering or bushfire reports required by Newcastle City Council, Lake Macquarie City Council or the relevant local authority.
How soon can you start my project?
We respond to every enquiry within one business day. A site consultation is usually available within one to two weeks, with lead times to start on-site typically four to twelve weeks from contract signing, depending on project size, approvals and trade availability.
How much does a home renovation cost in Newcastle?
It depends on the scope. In 2026 a bathroom renovation typically costs $20,000 to $45,000, a kitchen runs from $30,000 for a refresh to $60,000–$80,000+ with custom joinery and stone, a whole-home renovation starts from around $80,000, and a ground-floor extension runs $3,000 to $4,500 per square metre. For the full 2026 breakdown, see our free guide: What a renovation really costs in Newcastle. We provide a detailed, itemised quote after a site visit so you know exactly what's included.
What should I look for when choosing a builder in Newcastle?
Check that they hold a current NSW Fair Trading builder licence (you can verify it at Service NSW), carry public liability and home warranty insurance, and can provide references from recent local projects. Ask whether they manage council approvals and certifier coordination, and request a detailed, itemised quote — not a lump sum — so you can compare like-for-like.
What is the difference between a DA and a CDC in NSW?
A Development Application (DA) is assessed by your local council and typically takes 6 to 12 weeks for straightforward residential work. A Complying Development Certificate (CDC) is assessed by a private certifier and is usually faster — often 2 to 4 weeks — but only applies to projects that meet specific state-level planning rules. We advise on the best approval pathway for each project and handle the application process.
